With its forests, waterfalls, coffee and spice plantations, the hilly region of Kodagu, formerly known as Coorg is one of South India’s most beautiful areas. Kodagu has a distinct cultural identity that differs from that of the rest of Karnataka, with its own cuisine, language and costumes, along with a strong pride in its martial tradition. A number of Tibetan settlements are scattered around Bylakuppe, which is one of the largest areas of Tibetan Buddhism in Southern India. One of the most important monasteries here is the ‘gompa’ at Sera which serves as the Mahayana Buddhist University, one of India’s foremost learning centres for Tibetan monks and lamas. Another of region’s attraction is the Golden Temple of Namdroling, a beautifully painted monastery in peaceful grounds.
