This tiny state, along the Konkan Coast, consists of just two districts, North and South Goa, Goa’s distinct culture is a legacy of its colonial past. Evidence of the 400-odd years of Portuguese rule is still apparent in the people’s dress, language, religion and cuisine, and in their music. There are whitewashed churches, crumbling forts and yellow, ochre, green or indigo houses with white trims. The Goans are extremely friendly and make tourists very welcome. The market town of Mapusa and the vibrant flea market at Anjuna are also highlights. North of Mandrem you will find the Goa of your dreams: a scattering of coco-huts, and fishermen’s boats pulled up on the sands. In the south, Palolem beach is renowned for its beauty. Head inland and explore Goa’s wildlife sanctuaries and the splendid Dudhsagar falls.
