The climb up the Palani Hills starts 47 km before Kodaikkanal and is one of the most rapid ascents anywhere across the ghats. The views are stunning. In the lower reaches of the climb you look down over the Kambam Valley, the Vaigai Lake and across to the Varushanad Hills beyond. Set high in the Palani hills, around a small artificial lake, the town has crispy fresh air, even at the height of summer and the beautiful scent of pine and eucalyptus make it a popular retreat from the southern plains.
