A former capital of the Cholas, this town has a large number of impressive temples, including the 13th century Sarangapani Temple which is entered through a tall gopuram whose central shrine dates from the Chola period. This town also makes a good base to visit Darasuram’s Airavatesvara Temple, which was built by Cholas in the 12th century and has beautiful carvings, and Swamimalai, a bronze-casting centre.
