Picturesquely sited on the banks of the Narmada, Maheshwar is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. It was the site of the ancient city of Mahishmati, mentioned in classical texts. Maheshwar’s beautiful temples and ghats were erected by Queen Ahilyabhai of the Holkar dynasty in the mid-18th century. The 1.5 km long river front is dotted with shrines, ghats and the elegant cenotaphs of the Holkar rulers, and is usually thronged with pilgrims taking a dip.
