A remarkable town by the sea, it is famous for many reasons. The British sport cricket was first played here, the first cakes in India introduced by the British were baked here at the Mambally’s Royal Biscuit Factory and Indian circus has its origins in this town. Tellicherry also has old Moplah houses of the Muslim merchant families. This is also the place to see Theyyam, one of the most popular ritualistic dance forms of the region. It is a devotional form with a surrealistic representation of the divine. The performers are regarded as gods and devotees come forward to take their blessings.
